Abstract

The low level of students' critical thinking skills in learning mathematics, especially in function composition material in class XG MAN 2 Probolinggo, is the background of this study. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving students' critical thinking skills. A total of 18 students of class XG were involved in this study. The approach used was quantitative with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected through pretests and posttests conducted before and after the application of the PBL model, as well as through observations and interviews. Analysis was conducted using the Paired Samples T-Test statistical test to assess significant differences between pretest and posttest results, as well as Cohen's d to measure the impact of PBL implementation. Results showed significant improvement in critical thinking skills, with a pretest mean score of 54.72 (SD = 12.55) and posttest of 72.78 (SD = 10.89). The t-test showed a significant difference (t = -5.021, df = 17, p = 0.000) with an average improvement of 18.06 points. Cohen's effect size (d = 1.32) indicates the large impact of implementing PBL. Thus, this model is recommended as an effective teaching strategy.
