Abstract

In multicultural education, the implementation of differentiated instruction faces various challenges related to cultural diversity and teacher preparedness. This study aims to explore the strategies and challenges in implementing differentiated instruction at SDN Gambor. A qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design was employed, involving in-depth interviews with teachers and students, as well as classroom observations. The findings indicate that major challenges include limited media resources and a lack of teacher readiness. However, strategies such as the use of local languages (Javanese and Osing) and flexible grouping of students' abilities proved effective. Analysis results showed an improvement in student understanding and engagement in learning. The implications of this study emphasize the need for integrating local cultural elements into the curriculum and professional development for teachers, as well as supportive educational policies, to address challenges in multicultural contexts. This research contributes to the understanding of differentiated instruction theory and practice and provides recommendations for developing more adaptive and responsive teaching strategies for cultural diversity.
